If you’re selling security solutions, you understand how integral next-general firewall (NGFW) technology is to any successful implementation. You also know how much firewalls have changed and expanded over the years. The capabilities have become pretty complex, to say the least. Today’s threat landscape demands it.
But not all NGFWs are created equal and choosing the right one is a critical decision for your customers. Knowing what to look for can help you—and them—make the best choice for their requirements.
Avoid a scenario where customers undersize their firewalls to keep costs down. They may end up regretting it in the long run. Assessing the firewall’s strength throughout is essential. Make sure it has sufficient bandwidth to handle the security tasks at hand—without getting bogged down now and in the future.
Look for NGFW technology that’s open and will integrate easily with third-party security solutions as well as the systems your customers already have in place—including network monitoring tools, network access control (NAC) products, and logging and authentication servers.
Recommend NGFW technology that’s easy to implement and stay away from any product that requires the integration of disparate security solutions. Assess beforehand factors like the ease of policy configuration and product management. Your customers will want centralized management capabilities that are available through a single pane of glass—the ability to configure, monitor and report NGFW activity throughout the network.

It’s strongly recommended to conduct a cost/benefit analysis that factors in everything that will be required for implementation—including hardware, software, licensing, support and maintenance costs—and opt for a cost-effective solution with the advanced security features the customer actually needs. The size and nature of the organization will help with that determination.
Customers should plan on making a NGFW investment that will last from three to six years, so scalability is another important factor to consider. Your customers will want to choose technology they can grow with.
